How to Know When It’s Time for a Career Change

Whether you’ve recently graduated or you’ve been in the working world for several years, if you feel unhappy, unsure or unmotivated in your current role then it could be time for a career change. Ask yourself the following questions to guide you…

👉 What do I enjoy doing? Evaluate your current situation - are you perhaps just unhappy at your current company, or do you genuinely want to switch industries? Make a list and categorise each point. Writing down your interests, passions and values will help determine whether they are being fulfilled in your current role/industry.

👉 What am I good at? Surprisingly, our strengths are not always what we’re most passionate about. If you struggle to identify these by yourself, ask those you trust around you or think back to any achievements that stand out for you at work in the last 12 months.

👉 What is my current skillset like? This follows on nicely from the previous question. These can be both soft and hard skills, but here you can identify all the great experience you have and then highlight any gaps for self-development or upskilling you’d like to do to help you progress.

👉 Am I in the right industry? This might sound like an easy question to answer, but with so many roles and sectors, it can often be overwhelming and confusing. Research, research, research! Utilise the many resources out there including company websites and social platforms, and also connect with relevant employees on LinkedIn who work there. Reach out and ask questions, that’s what the LinkedIn community is there for.
